Delicious!!! My husband and I stopped in Cedar City to see family on out way to Wyoming and they recommend this place. I'm usually not a huge bbq fan but my husband is. They had a great menu with tons of choices. We loved how you could watch them prepare the food. The food was awesome!! Definitely bummed out they don't have one in WY! Just another perk for our next visit!

Went here for lunch and had the pork one-meat plate which was $10. The pork was good, the collards were really tasty and the potato salad was delicious! For some reason I love potato salad with big dill pickle chunks -- yum! My bf had the ribs which were quite good. Friendly service, good food, I recommend!

Amazing barbecue! It's all delicious I recommend the beef brisket or pulled pork. Their hush puppies are heavenly as well. Also they have wasatch brewery beers including Apricot! Yum!

I ate at "Sonny Boy's BBQ" in Cedar City, UT on 7/14/2011. It was my first time there. The staff was very friendly and I had a great time. I recommend getting one of their "Plate Meals". A 1 Meat Plate costs $9.99, while a 2 Meat Plate costs $12.99. Each Plate Meal includes two sides and a roll. If you are in Cedar City, UT and you want BBQ - "Sonny Boy's" is the place for you. I also like their slogans: "If there ain't Sonny Boy's in heaven, count me out!" and "Food so good it'll make your tongue slap your brains out!" (McDonald's would never use that one)

We came with a group of 36. Yes...36!! We followed the yelp ratings, so I called ahead to see if they could accommodate our group. They were very friendly and told us they would set aside tables for us. Service was excellent. Food was good. I like ribs where the meat fall off the bone. This wasn't the case, but it tasted good. Brisket was good. The cornbread was excellent, as were the hush puppies. The only thing that bothered me was that they apparently lost their beer and wine license for a couple weeks due to an infraction. I think it would have been nice for them to tell me on the phone, since the group was looking for a dinner spot with drinks.

Never had a bad experience here. The food is good and the staff friendly. Give 'em a shot and you won't be disappointed.

Best bbq in the tristate area. Careful attention to detail and flawless execution of time treasured cooking methods pay off big time for these excellent people.

Decent BBQ, but nothing extraordinary. Terrible service. The old guy with glasses and greasy hair needs an attitude adjustment. We brought in a big group and he treated me like it was such an inconvenience. Hello, more people = more money. You're welcome.

$22 for a dinky little plate of 'Sample Plate for Two'. $15 for a sad, dry and tasteless smoked pulled pork sandwich (smoked? I taste card board) and $13 for a plate of half rack of ribs that barely has any kind of meat hanging off of the bones and drenched in sauce. I had high hopes for this place based on the yelp ratings in addition to its claim of being rated the "Best BBQ in the State" for 3 consecutive years since 2013. They even claimed that they have the best BBQ on this side of the Mississippi. I mean, MAYBE that is slightly possible if I drenched the meat in sauce, but that's not why we go out to a BBQ joint to eat - I can grill at home and drench it in sauce and call it a day for less than $40. Whoever said that this place has the BBQ on this side of the Mississippi has obviously never been to California.

In a town like cedar city, this place is a very unique. While most people love BBQ, the good restaurants aren't found all over Utah. I love that this is a small town brand putting out an amazing product and service. It's impossible not to love this place, and these are my reasons. 1. Frychos. Well cooked fries topped with cheese, pulled pork (or brisket I believe can be substituted) and some delicious BBQ sauce. A big mess of heaven that asks to be gobbled up. 2. BBQ nachos. See the above substituted with chips instead of fries. 3. Fried cauliflower. This is one of their signature sides. It's perfectly fried and has a great taste that will make you order a double batch of it next time around. 4. Their homemade Mac 'N Cheese. I'm usually not one to compliment something so simple, but this isn't the usual Kraft box of sodium. No, this is real noods and delicious cheese with a kick of pepper to go with the rest of the food they offer. It's got a kick, but I have seen all sorts of little kids do well with it, it's just right. 5. The hometown feel. They really support the local schools and culture because their owner grew up around here. The rustic picnic tables around the edges sure are the finishing touches to a casual, fun place to eat. 6. Their "Wings Meal is great too! Big pieces of chicken, better than the average restaurant by far! Try the spicy seasoning they offer with the wings if you want to dance on the wild side. Enjoy!!!

This is your typical run of the mill BBQ food joint. Me personally, I don't like my food to taste like the bottom of the smoker. We ordered a full rack that came with 2 sides. The side selection is pretty good. Fresh potato salad with dill pickles however the potatoes were not cooked enough, they were still on the hard side. The mac and cheese was really tasty. The $23 rack of ribs...YUCK! Way to much smoke flavor. I can honestly say they were disgusting to me. My dad had the pulled pork sandwich lunch special with coleslaw and he said it was pretty good. The bun used was high quality and not some boring hamburger bun. Next time in Cedar I don't think we will be stopping by this place as the food is over smoked and for a full rack of ribs at a not so fancy quick service establishment its too expensive. On a positive note, the staff is quite friendly and the food is prepared quickly.

  • Rich L.

Decent BBQ 3 stars may be a bit harsh but the BBQ was warm not hot, the mac n cheese had too much garlic powder and the music was too loud. On the up side, the BBQ had a good bark and smoke on it.

I was traveling with friends headed for the Asian place next door when my friend Cheryl suggested that we just look at the menu for this place first and I am glad that she did. The food on the tables looked great so I went for a full rack of ribs. Now, I was hungry at the time and everything looked good but it was some of the best ribs I have had. I have had better but not by much. The flavor was just right and cooked to be moist and just a bit seared. The prices were very reasonable, $22 for a full rack and two sides. The cole slaw side was pretty good as well as the cornbread. The fries were better than usual in flavor and crispness. It was a decent amount of food for sure but worth it. Best to come hungry. The food was ready as we went to pay so its fast. The cashier even gave us free soft drinks. No question I will drop by here again the next time I am in the area.

It is Friday night and I was hungry. I show up to a couple places and they were closed. So I go to Sonny Boy's BBQ I get in the staff greats me. The people working there are super nice and friendly. The food is amazing! I had the ribs, braised beef and Mac n cheese. Finished that with a homemade southwest style banana pudding Amazing experience. I want this for dinner everyday!!!!

I had the two meat plate for $13.99 - brisket and pulled pork - includes 2 sides. The meat melts in your mouth. Fantastic. Nice quick service. I would defiantly drive off the 15 freeway for this place again. Yummy. No coke though.

I have cooked and ate so much bbq over the years, it is the last thing I ever buy. The lunch we had today was a great surprise! Brisket was flavorful without being dry. The chicken breast was really good. The fried cauliflower was amazing! Hush puppies made as ordered. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Will definitely stop again!

We were looking for a place to eat being from out of town. Driving down Main Street all you have to do is follow your nose. Checked it out in Yelp and it has great reviews and some awesome pictures. I had pulled pork and beef brisket with fried cauliflower and hush puppies, wife had the ribs and the same sides. They were extremely delicious and the sauces that Wayne-o told us to try were the perfect fit for the dishes. I am sorry I don't live closer because this place is GREAT!!!!

Very Good barbecue.... We arrived just before 8 pm and surprisingly told we could not dine in, only order take out. Business was slow so they were closing early. Good thing we came in when we did, otherwise we'd have to find plan B. I got the King, a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw, got the slaw on the side,; the pork was great, lean and not super fatty like some places, the cole slaw was excellent. My wife got the whole rack of ribs, I had a few, they were very good; smokey, tender and flavorful. She also got the Mac and cheese along with collard greens, also comes with cornbread. The Mac and cheese was ok, nothing great, the corn bread was not good BUT the collard greens were very good. We will be back.

Best barbecue in town. The frychoes are awesome. These guys have won best in state bbq for the last several years. We always order a whole smoked turkey for thanksgiving. Sometimes we get one for other large family gatherings. The family meal is worth the money. They have daily lunch specials with a drink included in the price. It is a great lunch destination.

We were on our way back to SLC from Zion and we're looking for lunch. As we were passing through Cedar city I yelped "highest rated" Restaurants and Sonny's was one of them. Now, you can't pass up the opportunity for some good que! We ordered the 2 Meat Plate w/Hush puppies and Mac n Cheese for sides and 3 Spicy smoked wings. Brisket - really good flavor but a bit dry Ribs - good, tender, nice flavor Mac n Cheese - boxed crap is better than what we had. Hush Puppies - tasty a bit over done. Still really good though Wings - they were good Cornbread - very dense almost cake like. It was ok. Overall not a bad lunch, however as one of the other reviewer said if this is the best BBQ Utah has to offer I feel for them.

It's ok. As I walked up, the outside BBQ was still smoking...enticing me with it's sweet aroma and promise of good food. The decor inside is appropriate and slightly reminisce of a cabin. I was the only one in line and walked up to three young people standing behind the serving counter. My first question was what's fresh off the still smoking BBQ, and it was pulled pork and brisket. Good, good. My second question was which is better? To which I heard both are good...ok, no worries, I'll take the pulled pork please and I scooted down the line to await my tasty sandwich. My food arrived, but the check-out clerk had his back to me and was taking to another customer. My serving clerk just kinda looked at me and shrugged her shoulders. Come to think of it, I didn't get any sort of welcome to Sony's or such thing. Well, I can put up with much for good BBQ. So the clerk finally turned around and let me pay and offered the generic "sorry about that" which I loath above most any other utterance a server can make. If you're sorry, apologize and make it right, if not, don't make some bland statement that every other dull server says when they really aren't sorry. Anyway, the food?Disappointment, it was dry. I tasted subtle smoke lingering after the pork first hit my palate, but it was dry. Not just, hey, this is a bit dry, but the kind that after I slobbered on the BBQ sauce and it was still dry. Dang it! The house BBQ sauce is good, nothing special, but good. I'd say overall this place is ok. I'd come agin if a friend wanted to, but I wouldn't bring anybody here on purpose for this lackluster experience.

Well, let's first start with the food. It is good, no problem there. Now, my problems. When attempting to order, my gf, little brother and I had to yell to one another because the music was soo damn loud. The music was also awesome at alienating your patrons. It'd be an understatement to say how I cannot stand country, but i can at least bare it when at a decent level. The type of country was ridiculous too. It might as well have been hood music, since the first song was about "burnin' it up" and drinking. Actually the next 4 songs were all about drinking. I guess if you're really trying to drive "home" the purchase of your alcohol, good job. I felt like I was in a bar, minus the part of it being dark and little kids were running around. End rant.

Had dinner here while staying in Cedar City for the weekend. We shared a some chicken nachos; a plate with pulled pork, mac and cheese, and fried pickles; a plate with brisket, coleslaw, and fries. The pulled pork and coleslaw were my favorite things. I thought the brisket was a bit dry. Didn't love the cornbread but there were condiments to dress it up. The staff was super friendly and helpful! Good work on great customer service.

As a BBQ lover and ametuer smoker, I whole heartedly recommend this place. For 8 or 9 bucks you get a good sized sandwich with a side. Go for the fried cauliflower as your side, even if you hate veggies. It's well worth it. I tried of couple of the bbq joints in town and this was by far the best.

This place is solid gold! The nachos, sausage, wings, hush puppies are all super amazing! I wish they had Sonny's in California

I could almost order the fried cauliflower as my main dish; amazing, and the house Chipotle sauce to dip in is delish. I've liked everything I've ordered except the Mac and cheese which was too strongly flavored for my taste.

The absolute best BBQ in town. Chicken, beef brisket, pulled pork, you name it, it's all delicious. My personal favorite is the lunch special, a Smoked Turkey Sandwich.

Came here while we were staying in town over New Years. My hubby is a definite BBQ man and he is very picky and hard to please. He loved this place, he had the Burnt Ends sandwich and the hot wings. The kids had hot wings and pulled pork sandwich. They loved those too. I think I had the best if you ask me; I had the frychos...they were soooo delicious! This will definitely be on our list of places to stop next time we are out that way.

The problem with Cedar City is that all the tourists are here to see the plays, but the plays end at 10:30 or 11 and the restaurants all close at 9:00 or 10:00. Not being a fan of gas station cuisine, I took the preemptive measure of getting dinner to go and directed the Anaconda in to Sonny's, since BBQ sounded like the most reheatable option and the Motel Hell DOES feature refrigerators and microwaves. We got a pulled pork sandwich with a side of baked beans ($7.99) and a one- meat plate of brisket, mashed potatoes and cole slaw ($10.99). We also got an order of hush puppies, which the counter man was very nice to explain should be nuked with caution so we didn't dry them out. Turned out not to be a problem. They never made it out of the parking lot. They were piping hot little puffs of deep fried goodness. Much lighter than the dense globs of corn meal I'm used to (and love). But these were great, especially dipped in the cinnamon honey butter. Oh, my! When we did get around to eating, I opened the clamshell with dismay to see that the slaw and potatoes were packed in very flimsy little cardboard boats, which were not covered so everything leaked and the cardboard was wet and falling apart, making it difficult to transfer the part of the meal that required heating and resulting in a general mess. The beans came in a styrofoam cup with a lid. Why not pack it all that way? Even with the major irritation factor, the brisket was lean and smokey, the cole slaw was creamy with a nice tang, and the potatoes were plentiful and tasted fine. Have to assume the sandwich was ok as it disappeared forthwith. I don't regret my decision, but if I tried this again, I would oversee the packing.

We were sent here by our hotel. We are not that picky and really wanted BBQ ribs. But the minute we walked in the door our impression was, "EW! Not clean!" No appetizing smells and we could see a filthy kitchen. Staff just gave us negative looks instead of welcoming. And, they were out of ribs. So we left. We think the reviews must be directed by the owners.

Great place! Really friendly, food tastes great! The only down side is not as much meat but plenty of sides, for a little bit of a pricey meal. I love it but being a college my wife and I can't afford it as much as we want. Would suggest it for anyone who loves southern BBQ!

*Sigh* There are very few times in life when I leave a meal completely satisfied. It was the BBQ I hoped it would be. Thank God. The husband and I shared the sampler plate. It was a good idea since we were first timers and weren't sure what to order. It came with brisket, pulled pork, baby back ribs, and chicken leg quarter. I would love to know how they managed crispy chicken skin in a smoker. Ribs were so good. Tender. Pulled pork was yummy. We ordered the fried cauliflower and hushpuppies with it. Our teenager ordered the brisket sandwich king style (with slaw). The brisket is divine. It was so moist and tender. It was love. I could come in and have just brisket. Nothing else. No sauce. No bread. Nothing. Just brisket. It was luscious. It had a good bite. It wasn't overly smoked and the flavor. Lord. The flavor was pure, unadulterated beef. Someone knows how to cook brisket in this joint and God bless 'em. Everything else is great, too. But go for the brisket. It would be well worth another 6 hr drive to be able to experience its glory again. Service was great also. Great suggestions from the staff on what sauce matches what. They were great. I salute them. We will be back!!!!!

The menu's on the wall to the right of the counter. To the very right of the menu board is their daily special menu. They have homemade sausages I'll have to try next time. The staff is very friendly and ready to answer any questions about their food. They carve the meats in front of you and offer a sauce bar to the left of the register. Their beef brisket was amazingly good. My hubby barely touched his pulled pork( his favorite food) and tried to gobble up my brisket! His words," I don't usually like beef but I'd eat this everyday!" Since we both got 1meat plates they came with 2 choice sides. They give you a healthy amount of food for the price. The cauliflower was a bit salty but still had a bite to them. A much better texture than most mushy attempts from other places. Their hush puppies are crunchy outside and light and airy inside. The Mac and cheese was hands down the best mac I've ever gotten from any BBQ restaurant. They make the mac and cheese in house with a hint of garlic, yummmmmmy! The cornbread wasn't our cup of tea but it's not meant to outshine the 'q anyhow. I think it's unanimous that we'll be back every time we come to Cedar City.

Had the pulled pork sandwich with slaw on the side and the red potato garlic mashed potatoes. Pork was delicious. The slaw had the perfect creamy bite to it and throwing some on top of the sandwich was just how i like it. Mashed potatoes were creamy and flavorful. Wendy, my friend with me, had the pulled pork meal with corn bread, mashed potatoes and mac&cheese. Mac and cheese was good, home made, full mater and gooey cheese. The corn bread was decent, a little dry but the homey butter made it above and beyond (get a lot of the butter!) Her niece had the chicken sandwich with the deep fried cauliflower and hush puppies. Chicken was flavorful and juicy. Sides were delicious! Try the bbq mustard, it tastes great with any of the meat as well as for dipping the cauliflower.

Great selection of sides. Family Meal fed 3 teenagers and we still had food to go! Pork was really dry, beef didn't have much flavor but chicken was really good.

DONT LET THE BEST OF STATE SIGN FOOL YOU. I love BBQ and the huge smoker out front made me want to go in and try some place new, but if this is the "best of state" than Utah has no good BBQ restaurants. Since it was our first time here we got the sampler for two which includes a taste of all their meats. Chicken was delicious! Truly the best piece if the meal. They have an amazing cole slaw too. The hushpuppies were a little overdone. However! When people want BBQ they come for the brisket and I must say the brisket was some of the most disappointing I've ever had. It was dry, tough, and had a nonexistent smoke ring. Except for the hushpuppies none of the food was warm enough which is a problem because once you put some sauce on anything it became a congealed mess. If it wasn't for the chicken this probably would have been a one star.

Came here for the second time, and it did NOT disappoint! Being from the south, I am very particular about my BBQ and this place is the BEST outside of my home state. I get the pulled pork, with the side of coleslaw and the fries. Absolutely divine. You will dream about this place once you've pulled out of town!

As a person who has traveled most of the country I can say this BBQ is top shelf. The brisket is amazing as well as the ribs. The garlic mash potatoes are a must for a side. Also the BBQ sauce is killer. To top it all off the staff is very friendly. I would make this a must stop of traveling I-15 or staying in Cedar.

Fantastic BBQ at reasonable prices. The spare ribs were tender and the brisket melts in your mouth. My wife enjoyed the pulled pork and spare ribs. When in Cedar City, this is the place to dine for top quality authentic BBQ.

It's quick, it's quality, and it's awesome. Choose beef brisket over pulled pork, and GET THE HUSH PUPPIES. You need them. And as the salty fella at the register suggested, dip them in the pillowy cinnamon honey butter - which, when spread on corn bread, becomes frosting. Fried pickles YES, baked beans are made with attention to detail, but garlic mashed taters are unnecessary. Come hungry.

Sonny Boy's BBQ is surprisingly good. I routinely travel through several small western towns on a fairly regular basis, so over the years, I've learned to temper my expectations. Occasionally, I'll be pleasantly surprised - and this is one of those occasions. Sonny Boy's serves good food in a pleasant atmosphere and is reasonably priced. And when you are on the road, that's pretty much all that matters! To those who wish to show off your fine culinary standards ... (Why are you dining in Cedar City anyway???) ... I'm sure that this won't match the extraordinary BBQ that your dear old mama used to make. Just remember that there are other choices in town: Sizzler is just across the street, Pizza Hut is not much further away. And of course, don't forget about Chilli's! I'll be eating here again on my next trip through town.

I'm a BBQ fanatic, typically found roaming around TX but every now and then while away from home I get a hankerin' for some Q'. The problem is, while away I'll come across BBQ reviews and find myself dismayed at reviewers when they start out with how great a place's BBQ sauce is (bad sign, good Q shouldn't need any sauce), or when someone else raves that ribs fall off the bone (usually a sign of over-doneness). So when I find a BBQ place in a city not known for BBQ I often wonder if my review criteria will make sense to a BBQ outsider. I decided to try Sonny Boy's and Fatty's this week while I was in town, sadly Fatty's went to cater an event and I didn't get to compare them. Sonny's was well packed the 2 times I visited. The smoker outside had a great smell and was a good sign, however the gas smoker inside was an unfortunate thing to see and I was told they use 3 smokers in their cooking process. We had a group so we did the family pack and a corn dog which came out to $52. Brisket - it was hard watching the meat cutter destroy perfect brisket by cutting with the grain and then cutting the thick slices into cubes. The picture on their wall shows perfectly cut brisket slices, not sure why she cut mine into cubes. Also no choice was given between lean or fatty brisket (we were served fatty). It was moist, had a decent smoke ring (but not much smoke flavor) but it did have some proper spice rub crust and the rub went with their sauce which I didn't care for at first but it grew on me, so that made up for a slicing job that would get you kicked out of TX. Pulled pork - ours was a little on the dry side but the sauce helped it go down. Chicken - I think was their best meat. I don't usually go for BBQ chicken but theirs was moist with a light crisp on the outside and just a hint of smoke. We got the sides but I didn't have any. I think the meat portions on the family pack were light, I would have preferred more meat and 2-3 sides. Overall it is a decent BBQ place and is a good choice for a local Q fix.

Sonny Boy's is a hearty option for the barbecue enthusiast. The vibe is welcoming and streamlined- you order first, pay and sit. I enjoyed a two-meat plate with brisket and ribs. The beef brisket had a delicious smokey flavor and wasn't too dry (definitely a must). The St. Louis ribs were savory and fall-off-the-bone, though there wasn't much meat on them to begin with. The portion sizes are filling, especially with 2 sides and cornbread. The garlic red mashed potatoes were tasty, and the fried cauliflower was like popcorn chicken without the chicken, if that makes sense. Prices are pretty good for barbecue- about $15 without a drink. There was plenty of parking and seating when I went, but not an intimate setting. Much more for the family or friend bbq fix. Also easy walking distance from Utah Shakespeare Festival/SUU campus.

Excellent decision to stop here. We are Texans living in Utah and this is the best BBQ we have found. Brisket and turkey were spot on.

For actuall fast food which I am usually not big fan of this was my favourite. I had steamed chicken with coleslaw salad and the salad was awesom and the chicken too.Love the coleslaw its great.

I really, really hope I just went on an "off" night. Cause it was OFF. I would've gone to (*cringe*) McDonalds if I knew Sonny Boys would be that sub-par. I've had a lot of BBQ in my day (I'm a born Texan, fer cryin' out loud) and I'm sorry, but this is the worst I can remember. I expected better-than-decent food because the place really looks the part. I mean, the building is cool, decorations apt for a BBQ joint, it's clean-ish, the cafeteria-style service is fun (they pull the pork and slice the brisket right in front of you), the employees wear cool t-shirts with sassy sayings... All the right stuff for a restaurant with a lot of potential. We stopped in at around 7pm on a Wednesday, and my wife & I got the "combo for 2" to split. It came with: * Ribs - how is it possible to make ribs that tough? It was seriously like eating "rib jerky" they were so tough. Sorry, but those were the worst ribs I've ever had. * Brisket - the best of the 3 meats on the plate (er, pie tin). Not the best I've had, but pretty good. * Pulled Pork - surprisingly dry, and mostly flavorless. The sauce kind of helped, but ketchup would've done the same thing. * Chicken - a big leg of chicken that was nothing to write home about, and cold (like the rest of our meats). Suspiciously cold, in fact, and slimy - I know it was plenty cooked, but it kept making me worry I was eating raw chicken. I really tried to like it, but just couldn't. * Sides - (would've got mashed potatoes, but they were out) 1: Mac & Cheese was ok, but had an overpowering flavor in it - fennel maybe? Would've been ok in moderation, but it took over the whole dish. 2: Baked Beans had an good flavor but were one level harder than al dente, which makes it taste really dry in your mouth. * Cornbread - pretty good cornbread, nothing special. Our friends got other sides & a salad, and they were equally unimpressed. I paid for all 4, and it cost about $45 for just the meals (no drinks). I wish I could have that $45 back! Bottom line: I guess you can go if you're desperate, but unless you've never had BBQ before in your life, don't get your hopes up. We were starving and still didn't like it. At all.

I come from Biloxi to visit my mom once or twice a year. Beleive me when I say I can get good BBQ anywhere. Sonny's may appeal to local tastes, or maybe it's just the only option in town, but as BBQ goes, it's just not that good. The pulled pork is tasteless. The sauce for it is 'way sweet and if you get it on bread, the bun is like a steamed bun or something. I've eaten here on a number of occasions... mainly because my mom said she liked it, but I have not been impressed by either the food or the service. If you are in Cedar City and just absolutely MUST have some BBQ, go ahead and eat here... you won't die, but do be prepared to be disappointed.

This is fairly decent place for a chain. They have some tasty BBQ offerings from which to choose. I went for the 2meat plate with the pulled pork and beef brisket. I had cole slaw and baked beans as sides. Overall, the quality was good and the food was enjoyable. I did notice that both meat options on my plate were a bit on the dry side. Still, I had a nice meal here & would recommend Sonny Boys BBQ if you're looking for something quick.

While visiting the parents vacation home in Cedar, this place came highly recommended. Just get the ribs my mom said. haha As we came in the door, the place was pretty busy. You line up to order like a "chow" line. Doesnt faze me either way. The kids there were pretty cool. The girl checking out had a shirt that said "nice rack" which I thought was funny being that she looked about 16-17. LOL The BF and I decided to get the "sampler for two". Our dinner was served on a beat up tin pie plate (but who cares about that really). Its a "chow time dinner". :) For our meats we got the brisket (4 outta 5 stars) alot of taste, a little fatty, but they gave us alot; pulled pork-yum; wings-they didnt have chicken that was done (hmm) so they gave us wings instead-we ordered the hot (weird flavor-it wasnt a buffalo hot it was just a metallic hot-if that makes sense) BF had enough with the first one he tried; and last but not least the ribs-we both had one each. Flavored with brown sugar but smoky (2 outta 5 stars-sorry mom). Im really picky about my ribs-I guess because I know how to cook them at home where they fall off the bone and if your a BBQ place you need to learn that technique or your gonna have dry ribs. Of the ONE rib I had-not fall off the bone and not much meat. The brown sugar gave the flavor a unique taste but all in all I wont go for the ribs next time. For the sides we had fries (greasy but good), cole slaw (just an average slaw) and baked beans (all different beans in it-different and good)-all pretty good. And then the cold corn bread with the sweet butter...not too bad. You would think that the corn bread would be warm served but nope it was cold. A little different than Im used to at these type places. i did like the condiments bar....cuz im the condiments queen. Chipotle fry sauce was good with a kick. They do have spicy bbq sauce behind the counter...*a secret? we did ask thats how we found out...not much to brag about and not very spicy. We will give this place another shot. Maybe my next review will be better. It was alot of meat and I think by the end of our experience we were "all meated out". lol

Fantastic, affordable, authentic food. Wish we could have it again and try the cauliflower. We had the pulled pork with coleslaw sandwich but it looks like you can't order bad. No place to sit. They should consider putting up a picnic table with a bit of shade. We ate in the neighboring parking lot under some trees but would have eaten in the car with the ac on if needed... It was that good.

We coordinated our travel plans (SLC to Vegas) so we could stop here for dinner. Sonny Boys dad (Lon's Cookin' Shack) closed our favorite BBQ joint in UT Valley, so we have to drive 4 hours south if we want the MOUTH WATERING FRIED CAULIFLOWER. I agree with another poster that the meat was chilly, but it tasted fantastic and I prefer my meat colder than warm so I can eat it right away :) The BBQ sauce is the boss.

Very tasty BBQ place; I can smell the pit every time I make a Lin's run. The pork sandwich is delicious, but I was expecting juicier ribs (maybe because I'm a baby-back fan more than anything). I'm no BBQ expert but this place is good enough for me!

  • Rick P.

Let me be clear. The BBQ here is great, the best I've tasted in this part of the country so far. If it were just about the food, this would be at least 4, maybe 5 stars. The problem for me is the plates they serve the food in. That's right, the plates. They're terrible. They're aluminum "chow trays", I guess, trying to simulate what you'd be eating out of if you were "on the trail" or something. But here's what they REALLY are: 10" pie pans that are about the weight of those disposable aluminum foil pie-pans you buy in 3-packs at the grocery store. Except they re-use these. Consequently, they're all bent up and won't sit solid on the table. Couple that with the fact that they only weigh about a quarter ounce, and what you have is not so much a plate but a freely-spinning food slinger. It's next to impossible to use a knife or fork to get at your food, without also holding onto the edge of your plate with one hand. Otherwise, it starts spinning or scoots off the table. Absolutely laughable, and makes what would otherwise be a great dining experience into an exercise in frustration and near-calamity. I've actually pretty much abandoned dining in here because of this - I get stuff to go. Because, as I said, the BBQ itself is darn tasty. P.S. I would have loved to leave a message about this on Sonny Boys' website, but they don't have a contact email address. I've mentioned it to the employees on the line several times, but apparently it didn't get passed on or was ignored. Hence the bad Yelp review.

Don't bother with this place, we have tried to like this joint since they opened. The ribs have a terrible flavor and are dry.

Ok, considering the location hundreds of miles from any real "city", I guess my impression was "adequate", especially if you are hungry and not in a mood to be finicky. I got take-out here on a road trip, the two-meat pork & brisket combo, and my wife got the chicken and the fried cauliflower. The pulled pork was a bit dry, brisket passable but not the super-tender-mashable-with-a-fork kind. Beans were a bit bland. The fried cauliflower was interesting (I borrowed a sample from my wife) and a bit unusual, but it didn't make up for the overly dry pork & brisket. If you are used to a good local barbecue that you go to very often, this one will not be up to that standard. Service was a bit strange. They seemed to take my order immediately and then sit on it for a while before starting it, even though they didn't have much going on. I plan on returning to the area in a few months for more sightseeing, but I probably won't come back to this particular restaurant, so it merely becomes a historical note. Unless you are absolutely desperate for BBQ, I would suspect you can find something a tad better in some other genre of edibles.

I eat here frequently and it's sooo good, every time! The beef brisket is my favorite. All of their sides are good, esp. the coleslaw! (And you know the coleslaw must be amazing if I'm going to pick that as my side over mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, hush puppies, etc.)

    (5)
  • Jordon P.

Excellent bbq. The ribs were tender and the brisket was very moist. I liked the simple picknic atmosphere of the place. The in-house smoked meat didn't need any sauce, but a wide variety is provided if you want. Avoid the chain restraunts and check out this local gem. They even have local craft brewed beers.

Went here due to mixed reviews from the last poster. Loved this the cauliflower and pulled pork was perfect and flavorful. For a cheap fast food joint the ambiance was fun and comfortable. My husband got the brisket and gave it a 3 out of 5. The nice cashier said they had just finished changing stuff so I say change is good.

Ordered the Sampler for Two. Portions undersized for the price. Pulled pork was cold. I don't know what they used to smoke the ribs but they had a chemical aftertaste. My husband saw the server scrape the cutting board then wipe the scraper on the edge of the garbage can. If I would have seen that happen, we would have walked out! Very unsanitary and a perfect way to make people sick. Hope they clean up their act before some gets seriously ill.

Extremely friendly staff but food was blah. Wings were waaaay overcooked and baby backs were average. Slaw and potato salad were average. If you're craving BBQ it'll do but you'll by no means put it on a list of all time greats like Dinosaur BBQ or good BBQ joints like Venice's Baby Blues which is mentioned here.

Surprisingly very good. I had the tri-tip sandwich and my wife had the BBQ chicken sandwich. Both were very good. Service was very good and friendly. Place was clean with a very nice atmosphere. My wife and I both like the place and regret we didn't try this place before while riding through on the motorcycle. WE won't make that mistake again.

food is fantastic! customer service... well... rude. we bought a local deal that was pay $10 then get $20 of food. we realized that it expired the day previous, and decided to go give it a shot anyway. i understand that there are expiration dates, but honestly? one day? and it was shot down rudely, not in a professional manner at all.

Great bbq! They also have a sister location in Hurricane. Wonderful everything! Way better than Dickey's and slightly better than the Hurricane restaurant.

We had pulled pork and sweet sauce to go. While nothing compares to good ole Lexington Carolina barbecue, I really enjoyed the food here. Lost one star because the sweet bbq sauce had a really terrible aftertaste. We ended up using some sauce out of our fridge. I definitely want to go back and try some brisket and some of their sides next time!

OMG AMAZINGGG!!!! From the food taste, to how fast they are, to the comp ice cream cones!!!!! This is a must go to when in cedar city!! I had the pulled pork with a dill pickle mashed potato and fried pickles. The pulled pork was soooo juicy and delish and my sides were sooooo good!!!!

  • John S.

Kinda country feel to the place, picnic tables and metal plates etc. We both had the brisket. Blah. Dry and tough. Tried to eat it without sauce...forget it. The person murdering the meat cut with the grain and acted like she was queen of the steam table. BTW which was an absolute pig sty. Food slopped all over and co-mingled with other selections. Prices were ok for where we were. I'm no BBQ expert but I know what I like and Sonny Boys ain't it. Sorry.

WOW! Words cant even describe this place! I eat here everytime I drive through cedar city. I order the pulled pork and the brisket, cauliflower French fries and a soda. You will never eat at a better BBQ place ever again! As I'm writing this my mouth is watering even thinking about this place. You will not regret going there. Ask if scott is there. He is the man the myth the legend he will take care of you!!!!

Great open atmosphere. Brisket and pork sandwiches were very good, although I needed a good amount of BBQ sauce on the pork to overcome a little dryness. Fried cauliflower was incredible, mac and cheese just average. Staff was VERY friendly... Thank you!

Drove by this restaurant after a day of skiing and it just felt right! Delicious BBQ and nice staff. We ordered the sampler plate for two and it was magnificent... and not very expensive for two people. Highly recommend this BBQ joint. We stayed at the Abbey Inn just off the 15. Sonny Boy's was a quick, convenient drive from the Inn. Looking forward to visiting the next time we're in the area.

I ate here in July of 2011. I thought it was pretty darn good barbecue. It's no Baby Blues, (Venice, CA) but the pulled pork and beef brisket were actually pretty darn good. Barbecue is really a personal thing anyway. I like more of the sweet barbecue sauces and not really the hot stuff. So for my money it doesn't get much better than Lucille's or Baby Blues. But Sonny Boy's is a close third.

This was some pretty awesome bbq. The atmosphere is awesome, the smells are tantalizing, and the food is great. Went with my family and got the family platter, which includes brisket, pork, and chicken, and 4 sides. We got collard greens (too salty and over-cooked), fried cauliflower, fried pickle chips, and coleslaw. All the sides (except the one mentioned) are amazing. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because the meat was just slightly overcooked. I would definitely go back there. Being slightly overcooked is mostly forgivable, especially when you cook such high quantities of meat at once.

Boom! This place is fantastic. The beef is probably the best brisket I've had, trust me I'd know, spend some time in Texas. The owner is super friendly and know his BBQ. Defiantly a place to stop in at on your way north or south. I do every time I leave Utah valley headed down south. A must must must. Don't pass up this awesome place to get some great grub and watch the game.

one of the best barbeque places to get burnt ends when available. Usually only offered during lunch time. Once they sell out.... that is it

This place is very good. The portions are huge (2 meals worth on everything but the sandwiches) and the prices are decent. Most meals are between 8 and 12 dollars and worth every cent. If you like meat (and listening to the blues) this is the place for you.

  • Vince L.

We stopped in when we saw the sign "Best BBQ in the State." The place is really clean. The cashier was super nice. The ribs were very good. The brisket was really good too. The chicken was a typical dry, Sauce was nice. They even have a sauce bar. The meats weren't too smoky. Personally I like a good rub and a nice smoke. This place had neither but the ribs and brisket were perfectly tender.

This place was amazing!! Staff was super friendly and helpful. We ordered the sampler for 2 and it came with chicken, brisket, pulled pork and 2 ribs. The meat had great smokiness which was expected from the giant smoker out front. The BBQ sauce we a lovely compliment to the meats. We chose Mac n cheese (meh), fried cauliflower (yummy) and hush puppies for our sides. I might just come back here for lunch tomorrow! Love this place!

Super good food!!! The meat was SO delicious. I wasn't impressed with the chicken, but everything else made up for it. I devoured my food is about 2 seconds. Also, the man at the counter that cashed us out was super friendly, and helpful! Definitely gonna go back!!!! I highly recommend this place!!

Breezing thru town wanted food that would stick for a long car ride. Yum. The real deal with BBQ. Get the two meat platter. The ribs and pulled pork are amazing. Try the fried cauliflower even if you don't eat fried food ( like me). It's worth it Very Casual environment

Saw online that they have three locations, how could we go wrong??? This was the worst BBQ we've ever had. We picked up some To Go to take back to our RV after a long day visiting the National Parks. The brisket and chicken sandwiches were extremely dry. They said they make their own BBQ sauce, which tasted just like one of the store bought brands. Maybe they buy pre-made sauce, add something to it and call it home made. The mac and cheese was elbow macaroni mixed in what looked like cheese wiz or something out of a can. This is what Utah calls good BBQ???
